Thinking ‘Bout You, Thinking ‘Bout Me

This is what you get when two YouTube singers collide; a cover of “Just a Dream” by Nelly. It was produced by Kurt Hugo Schneider, and performed by Christina Grimmie and Sam Tsui who made this song into a duet. I think this gave the song more depth seeing as how it is now being delivered from both the girl’s and boy’s perspective. I liked that in the cover the beginning introduction was done with merely the notes on the piano better than the original sound. The cover sounded more raw and intense. Although, at some points in the cover the vocals aren’t exactly perfect; sometimes the pitch has an awkward vibe when you’re listening. Nonetheless, I enjoyed listening to this rendition of Just a Dream.

This cover gets 2.9 Sexploding Ears out of 5.

Who Can Drive My Soul?

I know where I am when you are here, my way becomes so clear”. It’s clear that you should check out Jamestown Story’s cover of Drive My Soul.  Who has the ability to change an upbeat pop hit into a mellow acoustic harmony? Jamestown Story does. After listening to this cover, the melody left a veil of calm over me, while the lyrics invoked a passionate feeling of anxiety and possibly my insecurity of being unable to make a decision on my own, without the aid of someone else. This song left me wondering what/whose road I’m following. I didn’t realize how powerful this song could be until I heard this cover, especially if you interpret it from a religious perspective. The delivery of this song from Jamestown Story allowed me to see it in a different light and made me appreciate the original much more. The vocals are amazing, the harmonies outstanding, and the overall sound is phenomenal!

Congratulations Jamestown Story, you get 4 Sexploding Ears out of 5!

Only Girl in the World

Mike Tompkins is looking to make you feel like you’re the “Only Girl” in the world, and with his rendition of Rihanna’s hit song, I think he succeeded. Mike broke down the different musical levels in this cover and performed them while allowing his own personality to seep through; quite a talent. This A Capella sensation had the #1 viewed video on YouTube today. His vocal abilities keep the song fresh and interesting as you listen continuously, leaving a new element to be discovered each time.

I give this cover 3.5 sexploding ears out of 5.

A Shocking Turn of Events

Fireflies in June covered one of my favourite songs If It Means A Lot to You by A Day to Remember. Before I even heard their version of this song my initial reaction was “who do these people think they are thinking they can cover a band as amazing as A Day to Remember?” Then, I cleared my mind and listened to it openly. At first, I was mystified by the trance/electronic introduction seeing as how ADTR has a heavier tone to their music. The beats they interlaced into the background music managed to keep the original sound but at the same time mask it to mystify the listener. It seemed as though it was a completely different song, merely with subtle familiarizing clues. "Tell me something sweet to get me by".

Considering it was a cover, I give Fireflies in June 3.7 sexploding ears out of 5.
